Beat ‘Em Up!

Card game development

I designed a card game! Ever find yourself wondering if Shrek with fish for hands could beat two Abe Lincolns equipped with wobbly swords? Us too. So we made Beat ‘Em Up!

Game Concept:

A comedy card game that answers the age old question: Who would win in a fight?

To answer that question, we cut the challengers into 3 categories (not literally) that lets you assemble a deck of shuffled cards to try to create the most likely winner!

  • Character: Who is fighting, duh. Like painter Hitler, or an armored grizzly bear.

  • Weapon: What is available to defend themselves with. Like cupids bow, or a sentient pacifist baseball bat.

  • Modifier: Here’s where it gets a little whacky. The modifier is pulled from a stack at random after you choose your character and weapon cards. This can be literally anything and can guarantee victory, or make the other player question why they came to game night. For example, “but they’re covered in bees” or “but they’re shit-faced drunk” or “but there’s two of the character cards”. You get it.

Setup:

The Objective of the game is to win the most battles with your assembled challenger. Each player will have 3 of the character and weapon cards. The game requires 3 players minimum, 2 to fight and 1 to judge. Then after your winners are decided, go around the room clockwise with the next two players. Keep going until the deck is out of cards or you’re tired of bloodshed.

Rules & Gameplay:

The first judge will shuffle the deck and give out 3 Character and 3 Weapon cards. The first two players will draw (face down) a character and weapon as their challenger. When both players have chosen their cards and laid them face down, they will choose a face down modifier card and place it last in order. They will then call out their card like the picture, left to right [“I have John Wick before his dog died - with a ladder, orange vest, and clip board - But, they are completely shit faced drunk.”]

After both players read out their cards the judge will decide who would win in that fight! Once decided, both players draw a new character and weapon card and the match rotates clockwise to the next two players. Once the spare deck is empty, the game is over.
